So we packed up and headed to the Humboldt State Forest near to Garberville which has a very large collection of huge redwood trees.
This was a quiet ride, gently downhill and almost entirely shaded from the warm Californian sun. Below M2 contemplates which way to ride.
The Electric Cowboy glides past.
This is a living redwood, so it must be very old.
More avenue.
The Black Cav won the first sprint into Miranda to extend his lead in yellow. While the team then tucked into a local diner for carbo loading of sorts. We also met a family of Melbourne ex pats who just wanted to talk 'Aussie' for a while.
Once we got to the PCH on the coast the temperature had dropped to 21 and the fog had been set all day.
So it was on with some gear and another 35 km to Fort Bragg. Luckily there was a tailwind to help us.
The points contest is getting exciting now, however, some severe penalties to the Black Cav and Goose halted their climb. Both riders pleaded guilty to starting early and gaining an unfair head start. Also a bike audit found that those with black bikes were less observable to the courteous Californian driver ( points lost) and those with working rear lights picked up points for being sensible.
While Goose won the stage to the Fort, his 100 point penalty was too much for him to grab the lead. This left the yellow jersey to the Electric Cowboy to wear for the first time this tour. Cadel also changed hands to another black bike owner, the Duke.
Tomorrow it's all downwind with no turns on the PCH till we get to Gualala. But first up a trip to the bike shop for some riders to replace their tyre tubes. Expect it will be foggy first thing and hoping to clear in the afternoon.
We also received a nice write up in the Outside Inn news after our stay there earlier in the week..see it all at outside inn.com/blog/cycling-around-California.htm
