Day 13 Fort Bragg to Gualala

The day dawned a little foggy in Fort Bragg but quickly showed that it was going to burn off today. The new yellow jersey holder was ready to ride from the moment the fog broke.

Interesting Tsunami signage at each low point along the coast, this is the point of high ground you have to run to when the tide goes our really quickly.

Along the way we got to talk to interesting motorists, this guy spoke good Australian and was driving the 'girl car' as one local described Priscilla today.

These signs along the way are code for ' no shoulder to ride on for the next 21 miles'! So motorists be prepared to be held up by bikes, seems to work well. With only the odd impatient driver. An observation is that the big pickup drivers are the most patient always giving plenty of room while the small sedan drivers are the most likely to be less courteous or skilful when passing the peloton. I guess if you can't afford a big car you aren't that good in life in general in this part of the world and that includes trying to safely pass a bike rider.

The coast views were like this at every corner, there are only so many photos we could take.

This bay (below) was particularly stunning with the numerous rock mounds and kelp beds in the foreground.

Made it to Elk for coffee

Then it was back on the road, here Rocket and Goose lead the way

More rocks out to shore, this one seems to have a thousands years of bird poop on it

Looking refreshed after the coffee stop and flat roads with tail wind 27 degrees but wind was coldish, some fog drifting in the background

First sprint was the lunch stop at the Rollerville Cafe. I guess the staff got a little sick of the roller derby dad jokes from the ossies.

The road was now up and down and we averaged 30kph plus for the last 27 km. here the grand Duke offloads the leftovers from morning tea and provides water to a fellow traveller.

Coming into town the Goose provides a solid lead out for Rocket getting ready to light the afterburners.

And here we are at the Surf motel right on the rocky beach. Way too cold to go near the water as it was warm sun but breezy providing a refreshing wind chill.

And this was dinner site tonight, the St Orres guesthouse or such, we need to go down market tomorrow or we are in danger of becoming elite in cuisine rather than riding.

The stage took 3 hours 23 minutes averaging 27.6 kph for 93 km, with a tail wind mostly. we still had to climb about 1500m, but our new found fitness sees us all roll up 6 to 8 % climbs like it is just a gentle ascent on the Hume or Nepean Highway.

So the while M2 had another stage win, the Electric Cowboy picked up a enough points in the sprints to hold his lead. The Duke cut a few points past Rocket making him the holder of both Red the kangaroo from Part 1 and Cadel the koala from this trip. He almost has the coat of arms.

So tomorrow is Sunday stateside and we ride 90 km to Occidental taking in the steep Coleman Valley way which ventures into redwood forest and actual cougar country. The next day is a rest where we are scheduled to reconnoiter Napa and the Charles Shultz museum at Santa Rosa.

Unbelievably we have a winner of the 1000th blog view. An email complete with screenshot was received by the Electric Cowboy this afternoon, guess I have to find a prize now. Who was that winner?
